Northwest painter Kavin Buck’s new body of work, Temporary Remains | Inescapable End, explores impermanence and the temporal quality of time. Buck’s artworks emphasize mark-making and synthesize stylistic elements of realism and abstraction. Images of nature include fields of grass, accumulations of river stones and voluminous flowers which serve as metaphorical structures for the artist to rigorously investigate line and color.

Buck is deeply interested in the history of painting and his compositions are often bisected by a centerline, requiring the viewer to oscillate between both halves of the image. His latest larger-scaled series reveals a deep, luscious palette of confidently rendered shapes layered atop energetic splashes, repeated lines and delicate swirls of thinly dripped paint that activate the eye.

Kavin Buck received an MFA at the California Institute of the Arts (Valencia, CA) and his BFA from the Otis College of Art and Design (Los Angeles, CA). He attended the American University/Parsons School of Design in Paris (France) and completed post-graduate studies with the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program (New York, NY). In 1990-91 he was a member at the MoMA/P.S.1 National and International Studio Program (Long Island City, NY). Mr. Buck’s artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including shows at Laguna Art Museum (Laguna Beach, CA), La Estacion Arte Contemporaneo Estación (Chihuahua, MX), Los Angeles Contemporary Gallery (catalog with an essay by Ed Schad), University of Virginia Art Museum (Charlottesville, VA), Ruth Bachofner Gallery (Santa Monica, CA), The Drawing Center (New York, NY), and MoMA/P.S.1 (Long Island City, NY). His works are included in many public, private and corporate collections in the United States and internationally.
