January 3 - February 2, 2019

Opening Reception: January 3, 6 - 8 pm

Elizabeth Leach Gallery exhibits a special presentation, Light on the Wall: The Last Works of Deborah Horrell (1953 - 2018). In August 2018 the Portland, Oregon arts community mourned the passing of artist, teacher and mentor Deborah Horrell. Elizabeth Leach Gallery was honored to have worked with Horrell since 2001 and the exhibition focuses on artworks she created during the final year of her life.

Horrell’s studio practice included installation, sculpture and drawing. After working as a ceramist for many years, her interest turned to glass vessels and images of the natural world which addressed themes related to the fragility of the human condition. She revisited the subjects of memory and mortality throughout her practice and the exhibition, Light on the Wall, features a selection of intimate works on paper that address nature’s resiliency, growth and decay. Evocative and detailed drawings of heads, hands and birds possess a luminous, dreamlike quality and demonstrate Horrell’s masterful ability to communicate challenging subject matter with great beauty and poignancy.
