Internal Medicine marks Amanda Briggs’ first solo exhibition with the gallery since being included in previous group shows which featured works on paper. Her new series of vibrant artworks made of painted wooden cut-outs are deeply personal. The botanical subject matter has remained an expression of the artist’s ongoing health journey surrounding her diabetes diagnosis. 

Briggs finds both escape and inspiration in the natural world, specifically in gardening which allows for keenly focused observation of flowers, weeds, and leaves. In addition to everyday surroundings, the artist is drawn to found motifs and frenetic designs which are reflected in her fresh interpretations of silhouetted stems against patterned, labyrinthine backgrounds.

The new paintings are made from laser-cut plywood, and Briggs creates an open and improvisational feeling to her sturdy choice of material. Her distinct and lively shapes are enveloped by contrasting color bands in a palette the artist aptly describes as “sour, bright, and muddy”.

Amanda Briggs has a B.A. in Fine Art and a minor in Sociology from the University of Puget Sound (Tacoma, WA). She also has an AAS degree in Textile Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology (New York, NY).
