Malia Jensen's Nearer Nature: Worth Your Salt

Nearer Nature is a statewide series of projects created by artist Malia Jensen and supported by the Oregon Community Foundation. In 2019, Jensen placed six carved salt sculptures in locations that stretch across Oregon to form a body lying in repose. As the sculptural mineral licks attracted animals, 18 motion-activated cameras captured hundreds of hours of footage over a period of six months. Jensen edited the video into a six-hour artwork that highlights mesmerizing sequences of wildlife interactions in the surrounding landscape. The video is currently on view at the gallery through December 2, 2019, and continuously played on monitors in a variety of unexpected locations throughout Oregon October 18 - December 2, 2019. Worth Your Salt is Part One in a series of projects by artist Malia Jensen created with support from the Creative Heights Initiative of the Oregon Community Foundation.

Chance meetings, honest conversation, animal instinct, and tenacity have guided this project and it's my hope that you will find parallel experiences as you seek out and watch the resulting video. Consider the fragile beauty of the world we share, find respite in the company of animals, talk to strangers, savor a random experience and don't forget to leave a note in the guest book. With love and gratitude, Malia
