JULIA MANGOLD - Drawings and Sculpture

Julia Mangold is a Munich-born minimalist sculptor whose work explores shape, form and materiality. Her sculpture and works on paper are rigorous and formal, yet also very sensual. Mangold's practice in exploring formalism and limited color gradations spans many decades.
In the current exhibition of pigment drawings and sculpture there is a subtle shift that indicates the artist's interest and focus on creating a deeper sense of volume in these works on paper. Utilizing darker tones of blue contrasted by the lighter blue pigment with stark white space and an introduction of a non linear forms, Mangold activates the flat surface of the paper and creates a new sense of depth in this recent body of work. Continuing to explore variations on a formal theme, the work is consistent with the artist’s repertoire yet points towards a new area of exploration for Mangold.
Mangold has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work is included in the collections of the Busch-Reisinger Museum, Harvard University (Cambridge, MA), Yale University Art Museum (New Haven, CT), Museum of Fine Arts Houston (Houston, TX), the Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY) and the Deutscher Bundestag (Berlin, Germany). In 2015, Mangold was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Mies van der Rohe Haus in Berlin, Germany.
