Gregg Renfrow | Still_Life

May 4 - 27, 2017

Gregg Renfrow is a California Bay Area artist who explores light in his abstract paintings. Renfrow’s practice is linked to the Light and Space Movement of the 1970s and expands its tradition through his singular, painterly exploration. Still_Life features Renfrow’s luminous new color field abstractions that capture the essence of light and color.

Renfrow meticulously applies pigment layers with polymer on cast acrylic to create artworks that harmonize opacity and color. In his new painting titled Field, 2017, the artist patiently builds rich cobalt edges with layers of pigment that coalesce into icy blues and greens before dissolving into an airy pastel center. Renfrow imbues his artworks with a spiritual depth and his new paintings appear like glowing meditations; absorbing and reflecting the ambient light of their surroundings.

Gregg Renfrow received his BFA from San Francisco Art Institute and has exhibited both nationally and internationally since the mid 1970’s. His work is in a series of public and private collections including the Oakland Museum of California (Oakland, CA), the Norton Museum of Art (Palm Beach, FL) and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco, CA).
